Panama la Vieja, or Old Panama in English, is located just northeast of downtown Panama City. The city was orignally founded in 1591 by Pedraias Davila and is said to be one of the oldest Spanish settlements on the Pacific Coast. This old City quickly became a major center for merchants and landowners, with a presumed population of over 10,000. It was also one fought over by the English for the treasures it was said to hide. There were many stories on who destroyed this once proud city. The fact remains, after several invasions, there is nothing left but the few war torn ruins still standing.
